What to expect

We know visiting a new church can be pretty daunting—so here are some useful things to know!

What time should I arrive?

Our meeting officially kicks-off at 10.30am but you are welcome to join us for coffee after 10am. Someone from our Welcome Team will be there to greet you and answer any questions you may have.

What happens during the meeting?

Enjoying God’s Presence

The meeting starts with a time of worshipping Jesus led by our musicians. This lasts for about 40 minutes.

During this time there there will be songs, some people may feel led by God to pray or read from the Bible, and others may share things they feel God is saying. We very much believe that church is family, so the feel of our worship is friendly and informal, and you are welcome take part or just observe if you prefer.

Hearing God’s Word

At HOPE we are serious about preaching from the Bible because we believe it’s the word of God and it leads us to Jesus. We might talk about things like parenting, or marriage, or work, but in the end we don’t just need principles for living a better life. We need a person — Jesus.

Often we’ll go through a series over a number of Sundays, and we will teach for at least 40 minutes. That might sound long, but we aim to be engaging and challenging and dig deep into God’s Word. If you have any questions (or even think it’s irrelevant) then we’d love to know your feedback!

Wrapping Up & Hanging Out

Things will wrap up at 12pm (or shortly after). At the end of the meeting there will be people available to pray with you if needed. We have to be out of the building by 12.30pm, so if you want to meet some people and hang out make sure to join us for coffee before the meeting starts at 10am.

Children & Youth

Child Safety & Protection

Your children are important to us and we take their care and protection very seriously. All our children and youth workers are DBS (previously CRB) checked, well known within the church community and vetted by church leadership — as well as being great fun and gifted to work with kids.

Creche — babies & toddlers up to 4 years old

We run a creche for parents with babies and toddlers that is available every Sunday from 11am onwards.

Outside the main hall there is a small play area with toys and books to read. The creche team do a fantastic job of expressing God’s love for children through play and caring. You are of course very welcome to stay with your children or return to the main meeting as needed.

Hope Kids — 5 to 12 year olds

Our kids work has one simple goal: to introduce your children to the world’s greatest hero, Jesus.

During the morning your children will play games, have fun, worship and pray together, and dig into the Bible to discover more of Jesus.

If your children have never been to church before, they will be made very welcome and will not need to know anything about Jesus or the Bible to enjoy Hope Kids. If your child is shy or nervous and you wish to stay with them initially, please just ask the leaders on the day.

Hope Kids begins at 11am and runs to the end of the main meeting. You will need to take your children to kids work, sign them in, and then sign them out again at the end. This is part of our Child Protection Policy.

Youth — Ages 11+

At the moment teenagers remain in the meeting and are encouraged to engage in worship and with the preaching as adults.

What else is going on?

Being part of Jesus’ church is so much more than attending a Sunday meeting.

It’s about friendship and relationship with other Christians. It’s about being part of a Spirit-filled community who together grow in their relationship with God. It’s about being on mission together share God’s great story with our friends and neighbours.

Church is not just about Sunday. It’s about every day of the week.

Community Groups

Everyone who is part of HOPE is part of a smaller gathering called a Community Group that meet together at different times and at different ways during the week.

The focus of these groups is not any particular spiritual activity — like Bible study or prayer. Instead the focus of these groups is about building friendships with each other and with those who don’t yet know Jesus — and then out of those friendships looking at the Bible, or praying for each other, or running an Alpha course.

So what can you expect being part of a Community Group?

You can expect to eat together often! In every culture around the world families and friends eat together as an affirmation of their relationship. The same is true in God’s household. Jesus gave us a meal to share together that affirms our relationship with God and with one another. Some churches call this Communion—or the Lord’s Supper. At HOPE we make this meal time the centre of our community life.

Apart from the meal, you can expect to get stuck in and serve others. Being part of a Community Group is about giving of yourself to other people. So get to know others in your group. Love them, learn from them, pray for them, and figure out how you can serve them with the gifts and resources God has given you.

If you are not yet part of a Community Group and would like to be, email us at hello@wearehope.org.uk.
